The Renaissance Courtier essays The Renaissance Courtier was the ideal man. He was very knowledgeable in everything he did. He was muscular and athletic and knowledgeable of all sports, yet he had an appreciation for the arts. He was familiar with all exercises and forms of martial arts. He knew how to use all types of weapons while standing or on horseback, and knew what type of weapon to fight with in different situations. He was well schooled and knew how to read Greek and Latin and read technical language. He was musically inclined and played a variety of instruments for his own amusement. At dances, he was a commendable dancer. The Courtier also liked and was completely loyal to the prince. The Renaissance Courtier had a quiet confidence about him. He didn't walk around the village and gloat about all of his accomplishments, but everyone still knew what he could do. He was very knowledgeable but very content about it. He made everything look effortlessly, but secretly he practiced with a passion to be accomplished at each skill. Basically, there was nothing this guy couldn't do. The Renaissance Courtier was a good friend to all and he got along with everyone. He stood up for others and never put people down. He wouldn't talk about people behind their backs. He did nice deeds and didn't ask for anything in return. He also didn't contradict others. He knew when to express himself and when to be quiet. He was also serious, but he knew how to take a joke. Because of this, he was respected by noblemen and countrymen. During the time of the Renaissance Courtier, the working class did all the laborious work. Basically, the nobles concentrated on perfecting their minds and bodies. Life in the castle was one of cerebral challenges, of continuous education, and a constant search for amusement. EXPRESSION ON B CELLS IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS AND IN CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKIMIA - Literature review Example Components of the immune system such as the white blood cells protect the body through the creation of specific antigens. However, in some cases, the immune system itself can be a source of problems, such as in autoimmune diseases, where the immune system recognizes cells of the host body as invaders and attacks these. The cells that form an important part of the immune system can also function incorrectly. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one example of a disorder where the cells of the immune system are functioning incorrectly. This is a cancer where the B cells of the immune system are highly activated, show increased levels of proliferation and decreased rates of apoptosis. This results in the accumulation of affected cells, which prevents the immune system functioning normally. This review considers the role that Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have on immune system functioning, with a specific focus on CD180 (also known as RP105) and its role on CLL. Toll-like Receptors The imm une system plays a crucial role in protecting the body against pathogens and allows the body to effectively defend itself. One class of molecules that have been shown to have an important role in the effectiveness of the immune system is Toll-like receptors (TLRs). ... Image from Akira et al. (2001) However, while the TLR pathway has been shown to be crucial for the defense and protection of the body, it also can have a significant role in immune system diseases and allergies. This can be due to high levels of signaling or deficiencies of molecules that are involved in the signaling pathway . Thus, TLRs play a significant role in the immune system and related diseases. Understanding their functions both collectively and individual is important to understand the occurrence and progression of many different diseases, as well as looking for treatment for these. Studies have revealed that one potentially important TLR in many immune system diseases is CD180, also known as RP105. This molecule is expressed on the outer membrane of B cells that is known to be a leucine-rich repeat (LLR). LLRs are known to be important in the way in which pathogens within the immune system are recognized. A homolog of the protein has been found on mouse B cells, and has b een associated with a decreased rate of cell death. Experimental evidence shows that cells that were negative for CD180 were susceptible to apoptosis induced by corticosteroids, while those that expressed CD108 were not . In mice, almost all mature B cells expressed CD180; however, this is not true in humans. For example, in individuals suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) almost 16% of patients tested were not expressing CD180 in a significant quantity. Individuals who did not have SLE had a significantly lower average level of CD180 expression than those who were affected with SLE . Library Statement of Goals Essay Example for Free

Library Statement of Goals Essay I have submitted my application for admission into the Kent State School of Library and Information Science as an avenue for professional growth within my current career. As a former Spanish teacher and currently a computer technology teacher, it is important to pursue the MLIS as current librarians seek retirement and technology continues to infiltrate libraries across our nation. I am currently interested in pursuing the MLIS plus the K-12 licensure in order to serve in an urban school library setting. My current teaching assignment of computer technology lends itself to a smooth transition from the classroom to a librarian position as our school district places more emphasis on digital media. I remain fully committed to providing instruction to students; however, with teachers and school librarians retiring in droves, I fear that our schools will be left with overworked teachers and no librarians in our schools. By completing the MLIS degree, I will be accomplishing an additional career objective. I remain committed to my career goals that were previously established many years ago. My first goal was accomplished by completing my undergraduate course of study at the University of Cincinnati. My second career goal was to obtain my M. Ed. In School Administration and I accomplished that particular goal in the year 2000. My third goal, albeit somewhat personal, was to earn my private pilot’s license, and I successfully completed that task in 2001. My fourth career oriented goal was to transition from teaching Spanish to teaching computer science with an ultimate goal of finishing the required courses to earn the MLIS degree. I am currently in the middle of this goal. After speaking to our retiring librarian, she suggested that I apply my technology expertise and apply for the vacant school librarian position. Our current librarian highly encouraged me to seek at least the minimum courses for K-12 certification. After speaking with Dr. Sarah Harper and educating myself about the MLIS program and learning about the additional career opportunities associated with the MLIS, I have decided to pursue this additional graduate degree. The role of the librarian appears to be shifting from the traditional aspects of managing a library to more of the role as a librarian media technologist. An important current issue of the library is to also serve as a digital media center due to the increased technology needs facing libraries. I am greatly interested in this transition as many school librarians almost double as the digital media technologist. Colleges and universities are also adopting the model of librarian media technologist to enhance the needs of such educational institutions. As our digital technology library needs grow, I foresee a point where the current traditional school librarian could potentially be at a slight disadvantage without minimal technology background. I firmly support digital media; however, print media is equally as important. It will be the role of the librarian to determine which media shall remain in print edition for students, and which media will transition to digital media. Another current issue that is important is to fully integrate the school library as an extension of the classroom. It is important to fully utilize the library beyond the common routine of â€Å"pulling books† for a specific course. Instead, it would be beneficial to teachers and students if the library were to be established as an academic department. Establishing meaningful collaboration between the library personnel and teachers will foster a learning environment conducive to learning. As a school librarian, a goal should be to create a library setting that embeds the role of the library into the classrooms. Instead of thinking of the library as an independent space of a school, the library now serves as an extension of the classroom. However, it is equally important to keep in mind, the school librarian is not able to provide content specific instruction, but rather, instruction on how to locate the resources required for the specific content. It is important for the librarian to serve as an instructional partner in the learning process. Finally, another current issue that I believe is important is increasing the mobility of the library. Technology has advanced to where it is no longer required to leave the house and go to the library to seek and acquire information. With nearly all of our students owning a mobile device, whether it is a cellular telephone, iPad, Nook, mobile devices are changing the way information is delivered and accessed. While students easily have access to the internet through mobile devices, it is equally important that students have access to digital records housed in the library. Furthermore, many library users have learned the convenience of downloadable e-books. As teachers, students, and others navigate away from the traditional book delivered in print, it will be important for the librarian to explore new ideas and collaboratively implement a plan to cost effectively deliver more data via mobile devices.

Abscisic Acid and Stomatal Closure Abscisic acid is a single compound unlike the auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins. It was called "abscisin II" originally because it was thought to play a major role in abscission of fruits. Though ABA generally is thought to play mostly inhibitory roles, it has many promoting functions as well. In 1963, abscisic acid was first identified and characterized by Frederick Addicott and his associates. They were studying compounds responsible for the abscission of fruits (cotton). Two compounds were isolated and called abscisin I and abscisin II. Abscisin II is presently called abscisic acid. ABA is a naturally occurring compound in plants. It is a sesquiterpenoid (15-carbon) which is partially produced via a certain pathway (mevalonic pathway) in chloroplasts and other plastids. Because it is sythesized partially in the chloroplasts, it makes sense that biosynthesis primarily occurs in the leaves. The production of ABA is accentuated by stresses such as water loss and freezing temperatures. It is believed that biosynthesis occurs indirectly through the production of carotenoids. Carotenoids are pigments produced by the chloroplast which have 40 carbons. Breakdown of these carotenoids occurs in a complex mechanism which produces ABA. The transport of ABA can occur in both xylem and phloem tissues. It can also be translocated through paranchyma cells. The movement of abscisic acid in plants does not exhibit polarity like auxins. ABA is capable of moving both up and down the stem. The various roles of ABA are †¢ Stimulates the closure of stomata (water stress brings about an increase in ABA synthesis). †¢ Inhibits shoot growth but will not have as much affect on roots or may even promote growth of roots. †¢ Induces seeds to synthesize storage proteins. †¢ Has some effect on induction and maintanance of dormancy. (This information taken from http://www.plant-hormones.info/abscisicacid.htm) Stomatal Closure †¢ Addition of ABA to the growth medium (a mixture of vermiculite and peat moss) causes the closure of the stomates within 3 h and an increase in the Pos of the protoplasts of the aba1 plants to 50 mm s-1. †¢ Arrival of ABA in the leaves appears to signal stomatal closure as well as a change in the Pos of the plasma membranes. †¢ We hypothesize that under non-stress conditions ABA is required to maintain a population of actively functioning aquaporins at the plasma membrane.

A Birthday Suprise

It was 31st May of 2013 and it was my father’s birthday. He is the type/kind of person who prefers simple dinners with his own family instead of noisy celebration with relatives and friends. It was Friday and after we wished him happy birthday, he went to work. Well my father thought that we were just going to have a dinner as always. But this is what he knew while my mom and I had organized a birthday surprise. My mom had invited all his close friends and family for a party in the evening. Everything was prepared. Even I passed all the day shopping to buy a present for my father. I couldn’t wait till my father came home. Anyway he arrived sooner, I began to get dressed. I was extremely excited. My mom had the most difficult ‘task’ if I can say so. She had to convince him to wear a suit and she made it up. I think that my dad understood that he had missed something. So he began to ask where are we going and why is he wearing a dress. I told him we changed the reservation. But finally we arrived and everyone was waiting for him. When my father entered in, all began to sing the happy birthday song. I remember the look on his face, extremely surprised and indeed flattered. He had teary eyes as we ran to embrace him. Everyone had a wonderful time during father’s birthday bash. Time by time I have a look to those photos we had. It really was a special day. 2 terbilang Bab 9 : Juara Songsang (Sabrina Halid) Ahli-ahli Pasukan Zamrud II tidak menyangka bahawa Pasukan Aura Suci bertindak jahat dengan merampas buah cempedak aneh tersebut . Mereka sungguh kecewa . Tiba-tiba Adeen memberitahu mereka bahawa cabaran Pasukan Zamrud II belum berakihir dan mengarahkan mereka mencari pasu emas itu di atas lantai terowong . Pasukan Aura Suci telah dibatalkan penyertaan mereka kerana didapati menggunakan kaedah tidak bermoral terhadap Pasukan Zamrud II. Para ahli Pasukan Zamrud II segera berpatah balik dan mencari pasu emas itu . Pauline menemukan pasu emas itu . Dengan itu , pasukan Zamrud II telah berjaya ke pusingan kedua . (Danisha Rai ) Para ahli pasukan Pertandingan Avatari untuk bersedia untuk memulakan pusingan kedua . Semasa pertandingan baru berlangsung, Adeen mendapat salah satu cip mikroelektrik penting mesin Avatari sudah hilang. Anggota apsukan Zamrud II mula resah . Adeen yang lebih tertekan . Tiba-tiba Adeen teringat akan Pak cik Tan ada membawa papan litar gentian dan cip yang sama pasti ada di atas papan litar tu . AAdeen bernasib baik kerana papan litar itu masih ada lengkap dengan cip mikroelektrik, Adeen segera memasang cip itu. Para ahli pasukan Zamrud II sudah bersedia untuk berjuang . Mereka telah mendapat jawapan kepada teka silang kata iaitu â€Å" buaya† . Jawapan itu tepat dan avatar Pasukan Zamrud II memasuki kawasan padang pasir . Mereka berada dalam zaman Mesir purba, iaitu pada zaman Firaun. Setelah melepasi halangan daripada ulat besar, mereka akhirnya berjaya sampai ke kawasan bangunan luas. Di situ mereka berjaya menemukan buaya emas. Adeen mengarahkan ahli pasukkanya pergi ke Kuil Abu Simbel untuk mengutip lebih banyak harta karun . Pasukan Zamrud II berjaya ke pusingan ketiga. ( Diana Syazhanny) Dalam pusingan ketiga, cabarannya ialah bertanding permainan tradisi . Setiap pasukan akan bertanding dengan pasukan lain untuk menentukan pasukan mana yang layak ke pertandingan akhir . Setaip pasukan mesti menguasai sebanyak mungkin permainan . Pauline memilih memanah . AIna memilih congkak . Anas memilih catur . Anjali pula memilh mahjong . Apabila pusingan ketiga tamat, Jepun menduduki tempat pertama , Rusia di tempat kedua , Australia di tempat ketiga dan Amerika Syarikat di tempat keempat . Malysia berkongsi markah dengan Thailand dan Republik Rakyat China . Oleh sebab terdapat tiga pasukan yang layak , maka satu pemecah seri akan diadakan . Halim muncul untuk menetukan pasukan mana yang mendapat tempat kelima untuk ke pertandingan akhir . Setiap pasukan akan diberi satu peluang untuk meneka apa yang ada di dalam genggaman Halim . Thailand meneka guli. China meneka wang syiling . Malysia melalui Aina meneka belalang. Tekaanya tepat . Pasukan Zmrud II layak ke pertandingan akhir .

The Glass Menagerie By Tennessee Williams - 1540 Words

It is easy to read through â€Å"The Glass Menagerie† by Tennessee Williams and quickly dismiss it has a play of a nagging mother, disheartened son, and socially incapable, whimsical sister. The three seem completely caught up in their own narrow mindedness they are blind to the reality around them. While these may all be true, the characters exhibit far more complications than the surface analysis proves. In Tennessee Williams play, the characters are full of complexities and contradictions. One of the protagonists, Tom Wingfield, wars with himself for a life unlike the one he has now. Eventually, he sets forth to plot a way to abandon his family and obligations to retrieve his own ambitions. In doing this, Tom repeats history and his mother†¦show more content†¦Tom does nothing of the sorts to deny the accusation. Further on, Tom and Amanda reconvene their aggression towards one another in a heated argument where Tom declares, in chunks of being interrupted,  "What in Christ’s name am I supposed to do! Look- I’ve got no thing, no single thing, in my life here that I can call my own† (III). This matter shows Tom’s desire to feel important, and even needed, by his family, and how his career gives him the sense of slavery. He points out to Amanda that he pays for their home by shouting, â€Å"who pays rent on it, who makes himself a slave to -† (III) before being cut off by her and storming away once more. Tom Wingfield’s displeasure at home and with his career brings him to plot a way to move. The audience is given the first step in his maneuvers when he confesses to Jim, the gentlemen caller Tom brought home for Laura, his lust for adventure. In a frenzy of in-the-moment excitement Tom spills to Jim, â€Å"I’m planning to change. I am at the point of committing myself to a future that doesn’t include the warehouse and Mr. Mendoza or even a night-school course in public speaking† (VI). Jim is an attentive listener, providing no advice other than suggesting Tom will regret his actions of not paying the bills after Tom boldly confides, â€Å"I am starting to boil inside. I know I seem dreamy, but inside-well, I’m boiling† (VI)! This is when the audience gains an insight to Tom reaching his limit.
